Yes, another California girl here with the same complaints, especially now that I moved to Maine!! Sigh. I’m going to Italy next artichoke season!! Thanks for the great recipes and the paring knife video! Travel safe!
Thank you, Terry. I wonder why there's not more cultivation of artichokes in the U.S. Seems like a missed opportunity! And yes, Italy during artichoke season is the best.
This a lovely tribute to artichokes - thanks for including them in this delightfully written piece. I hope this will drive others to try artichokes - perhaps even making them a regular on the table when they are in season!
I’m envious of your artichoke access! Your post reminds me of an old recipe for baked artichokes stuffed with Brie. Labor-intensive but tasty, and I had the scars to prove it 😳
Stunning, positively stunning artichokes. I live in Northern California, where artichokes grow, and we never see them like this! I planted 2 of my own but they drowned in the heavy winter rains. So glad you’re taste returned and you have a kitchen in Abruzzo!
I couldn't believe they were still in the market. Feeling very lucky indeed, Gigi. We get California artichokes in the D.C. area, but by the time they get to our side of the country they are usually all beat up and not very appealing!
And huge! I have an appreciation for artichokes since I grew up here, but something has changed; like our strawberries, the artichokes only come in one variety and one size- huge! The strawberries are crunchy & the chokes soft. Weird. Sometimes you see the baby ones but they’re usually beat up and not very nice. Not much of a home cooking area here, so produce can be hit or miss. Not like the astonishing markets in Italy! Enjoy enjoy enjoy!
Driscoll has ruined strawberries (and other berries) IMO. They are as big as apricots, flavorless and cottony inside. People have forgotten what strawberries are supposed to be ~ small, deeply red, juicy, and bursting with flavor.
I do have a favourite Domenica. It involves a trip to Rome in the early spring! Sadly, we really don't have artichokes here on the Westcoast of Canada so the only way I get to enjoy them, other than our bi-annual trips, is to purchase jarred ones in EVO. Happy spring!

They are truly special. Thank you, Jack!
Indeed...artichokes play a significant role in my food memories.
Sadly, we missed out on spring artichoke season this year. Luckily you made it while they were still available! I do so want to try carciofi fritti!

That sounds incredible. Worth the scars, for sure!
Have the most wonderful time. Enjoy getting your taste buds back.
I didn't get covid but spent two weeks with bacterial influenza!
NIce to see the love of artichokes! Safe travels.
Thank you, Christiine. It was a weird few days, but all back to normal now. Hope you are feeling better as well.
Thanks. Glad you got through it so fast!
Stay well!
The fried artichokes with pecorino! 😋 all of these artichokes and recipes are gorgeous, and, of course, the illustration! 💚 💜
Thank you, Jolene. Those fried artichokes were a treat.

Apparently it’s still artichoke season in Hyde Park, London! 🇬🇧

Welcome home! Enjoy.
Good to have more than one home in your heart!
