The Christmas lights are already strung across the via Garibaldi (they won't be lit until the evening of November 21, but they are there, sparkling in the thin November sunshine) I am seriously thinking about covering the house in fairy lights this week!
Our “Christmas” lights are left up all year round in our hall and dining room but only turned on in the late autumn and winter to brighten up the house. They make me smile even in the darkest hours.
That photo is so soothing. Thank you for sharing and, yup, I’m with you, Jolene and your readers: colored Christmas lights in the kitchen and white lights on the mantel garland!
I’m preparing to make mostocholli from Preserving Italy. I couldn’t find a decent grape jam, so I’m going with a marionberry preserve. Berries are defrosting. I grew up hearing about the cookie and must have eaten it somewhere. Best to you and yours, D.
I am always, always the last to put out lights in our cul de sac, get our tree up, etc. My goal this year is to do it by the festa di Santa Lucia, which is Dec. 13. Surely even I can make that deadline! I'll definitely be breaking out the Christmas music soon. xo
Thanks for this fabulous set of Substack links, Domenica—much needed perspective on the horrible week that was. The picture of the snow-dusted path to Penne is just lovely.
It DOES look like snow, though it's actually white pebbles. These are called "strade bianche" (white streets), and you'll find them threading throughout the foothills of the Apennines. I want to follow them all...
Domenica, you are brilliant! You share fine reading for us all AND get a reprieve for yourself! Grazie tanto, amica.
Also, my constructivist “Christmas tree” stands year-round here in the treehouse living room….With lights always, and ornaments, usually starting in December…However, with this reading, I will ornament the form today in the spirit of happiness and hope…Why not?
Our fairy lights have been up in the living room window since just before the Pandemic...we were in Rome then but when we returned we decided to leave them in place for its duration. Now however, it seems even more appropriate for them to be there all the time. They add a bit of cheer when that is so sadly needed these days.

I like the idea of using holiday lights to cast away the autumn gloom. Thank you!
Wonderful photo, Domenica, and like all the posts.
Thank you, Dulcy xx

Please let me know how the mostaccioli turn out, Beverly!
We keep fairy lights up all year but I’m definitely thinking about full on decorating early this year. We could all use some joy!
And I confess I actually did listen to Christmas music this week 🫣

I’d be overwhelmed by outdoor installations!
We get a live tree so we can’t do that tooooo soon or it’s a mess…but we might break out our subdue scene projects soon.
We felt the effects of this sad week in Canada as well.
Thank you for the many insights and the hopeful
photo. Take care. Longer tables sound wonderful!
I love Jose's embracing philosophy. MORE of this, please.
